Psychic surgeons in the West are hitting back at an imminent clampdown by the Government which they fear could wreck their work.

In April, provisions of the Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951 will be repealed, to be replaced by Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading regulations prohibiting conduct which would mislead consumers over transactions they would not have entered into otherwise.

The last conviction under the 1951 Act, which replaced the Witchcraft Act 1735, was as long ago as 1992.

It required proof that the medium or healer was fraudulent, but from April - and this is the crux of the matter as far as spiritual workers are concerned - a complainant will be able to claim fraudulence and it will be up to the medium or healer to disprove it.

This week, spiritual healers Nina Knowland, from Trowbridge, Andy Porter, of Chippenham, and Gary Mannion from Harrow, launched the Unity of UK Psychic Surgeons in a bid to safeguard their status and also to over-see accreditation.

"I think it's the Government trying to gain control of people," Gary told me. "If you look at the whole spiritual movement, it's become so big over the last couple of years, and so many people are now involved in it, it no longer seems just entertainment. I think that's scared the Government and the drug companies because the majority of people nowadays are very happy to look to the alternative route rather than take tablets for the rest of their lives."

Andy said: "We look to doctors, surgeons and hospitals to provide us with healing and, in some cases, that works fine and they provide a great service.

"But there are times when the service they provide isn't so good, and they can't perform the healing we can do. The general population needs to have a choice."

Nina, who practises at the You Beauty Clinic in Trowbridge, asserted: "I don't want anyone going away from my door saying they've been ripped off or that I'm fraudulent.

"If I couldn't help somebody I wouldn't expect any money from them. I would never accept money from anyone if they weren't satisfied. We never promise a cure, we are healers, not doctors. It's a complementary thing.

"All of us strongly urge our clients to continue with any medical treatment or medication until their doctor stops them."

Nationally, the Spiritual Workers Association has been set up to fight the proposals and has launched a petition to try to persuade the Government to work with the main spiritual groups to ensure the new regulations reflect their needs, and also respect their religious and philosophical basis.

It would mean recognising a governing body for all kinds of mediumship and other psychic work which could set standards and regulate practice.

I know that the SWA is deeply concerned that the new rules will force mediums, healers and other psychics underground.

This would be counter-pro-ductive, it says, because it would allow frauds to prosper in a way that would be impossible if the field was covered by an Act that actually reflected the uniqueness and ethos of the field.

Spiritualism, of course, is a religion recognised by Act of Parliament. It involves belief in life after death, and part of its practice is to show this belief through the practice mediumship.

It's a peculiarity that, under the latest equality legislation, one of the areas in which discrimination against spiritualists is prohibited (on grounds of religious or philosophical belief) is the provision of goods, facilities or services - something which the new consumer proposals seem to have overlooked.
